"Christmas Day dawned with the full horror of his predicament.  He found it impossible to move along the side of the hills without his sledge capsizing.  There was nothing for it but to descend to the valley floor, which was in fact a glacier.  To help manoeuvre his sledge he clipped it only two feet behind him instead of the usual 10 or 12 feet and then he broke the second rule, he took off his skis."
